Brooklyn Naval Yard Site Analysis

Change is consistent. Throughout years spaces and areas evolve into something more of their former self, or peel off into a new road of self exploration. The location of the Brooklyn Naval yard and current understanding of what it is allows for the site to evolve in any way it pleases, with Influence coming from all directions. Being a home of American production for centuries and now bordered with retail and neighborhoods, the naval yard is faced with the challenge of adaptation. Brooklyn adapting to higher income levels and gentrification is pushing people with lower incomes further away from the city. Adapting to the needs of its surroundings the naval yard has the potential to provide shelter and work space to those in need. With a location well connected to its surroundings, the ability to adapt into whichever way needed by the community can create a space of mixed use but also mixed demographic, sparking new social interactions and development within the community. Creating a space that is able to adapt and change with the current social, political and economical trends makes an area that acts almost as a living organism. This programmatic space can act in the same ways as favelas, with adaptation to its current surroundings with less retail and production, and more housing or vise versa. The programmatic ideas can adapt and change to the needs of its users based on its current surroundings, but what if its surroundings change? Understanding the potential of global warming and climate change need to be weighed in the overall design of the space. Looking at not only the current problems the site faces but the potential future problems greatly increase the lifespan on the designed program.
